Sometimes it’s the light

Light from the fenceline 0214_StaatsThe weather was cold yesterday – barely up to zero with a biting north wind of 20+ mph.  With those conditions I chose to work inside for the day.  I walked past the south window several times, looking at the patterns in the snow as they changed throughout the day.  Eventually they called me outside to photograph.  The sun is still relatively low in the sky, making for some wonderful lines as it slid through the fence and threw its light on our meager snow.  There were bits of leaves and tree debris that danced across the pattern, and a rabbit had made its way across the yard and its footprints slashed through the light and the dark.  Sometimes it’s the light that pulls the scene together and tells the story.

You are a brave soul for confronting winter head on, and with your camera, no less. I know you are, because I am too. I really look forward to the challenge of “suiting up” in order to get my daily walk in, and it’s always rewarding. What’s interesting to me about your entry for today is how it links directly with thoughts I’ve been having about the importance of shadow. I could go on about it, but with the snow cover, shadows in their various permutations take on added significance and your photograph “highlights” this idea. Sometimes it’s more about what’s not in the light.

Thanks for your comments and thoughts, Rex. I will be the first to admit that I am overly bundled up by the time I head out the door during winter, but if I’m not comfortable it’s not possible to marvel at the beauty of winter and absorb what it offers to us. And what “rests” in the shadows is important not only in the landscape, but also in the “internal” landscape of our selves. The ever-constant pull of light and dark, yin and yang, summer and winter…

Thanks for the compliment! It is one of those images that you look at time and again and see something different each time.
