Signs of spring

Spring has arrived in the north, and we are marveling in it’s colors and textures. It is all a great awakening from the cold and quiet of winter. Spring rains have brought green to our grasses, and caused the flowers to open and burst into bloom. The daffodils, magnolias, and crocus are all basking in the warm sunshine. The rains have brought gentle showers and also thunderstorms that roll through quickly and seem to clear in an instant. If we’re fast enough and the conditions are right, they also grace us with wondrous rainbows of color – sometimes even complete double rainbows!

The return of spring

Spring daffs and tulips 12834_StaatsFinally!  The colors of spring have returned to our Minnesota landscape.  The white of winter gave way to the brown, prior to the green of spring.  And now the flowers have burst into bloom, adding their yellows and pinks.  Not only has the landscape brightened, but peoples’ moods have been buoyed by the bright colors too.  A bed of daffodils was showcased in front of a showy field of tulips — the best of spring all in one spot, and all blooming at the same time.  When I was a child, we would make “baskets” out of colored construction paper, put flowers in them, and hang them on the doors of our neighbors to celebrate May Day.  I’m intending this post as the present-day equivalent to my readers.  Happy May and spring!

Wishing for spring

Soft daffodils_Staats 8674The calendar turns to March, and our wishes turn to spring.  The cold and hardness of winter is still around us, but this is when we yearn for the softness of spring – for color, thawing, and green.  In Minnesota, the only place to find that now is at the McNeely Conservatory in Como Park – our very own oasis of spring.  These daffodils represent the hope and promise of spring to me.  The yellow of sunshine, the green of new beginnings, and the softness that starts the season of spring.  Soon……

Yellow of spring

The one color that sums up everything about spring is yellow.  It’s the color of sunshine, the color of warmth, and the color of daffodils.  These bright flowers shine with color and promise and brighten any day.  Although we don’t have daffodils blooming outside just yet,  I was fortunate to find these lovely blooms at the McNeely Conservatory in Como Park.  They speak to me of warmer temperatures, the end of winter, the hope of spring, and the promise of summer.
