We’ve just returned from a most relaxing and refreshing vacation. A mere four hours north, in the land of lakes and pines, is a sure spot to restore one’s spirit. The Minnesota north woods were calling us, and we were not disappointed. The weather was perfect with highs in the 70’s and lows in the 40’s. I photographed six beautiful (and equally different) sunsets, one full moonrise, three peaceful sunrises, and many adventures in between. We caught more than our share of bass, crappies, and sunfish. We canoed over an aqua-marine lake, and hiked through the woods. And during all of these we were accompanied by the sounds of the loons – a haunting yet wonderful call. Without the distractions of television, radio, news, and city-life we quickly decompressed into a life of quiet and simple pleasures, relaxation, and the appreciation of the beauty and wonder of this area of Minnesota.
Minnesota
Cosmos
I’ve always enjoyed the lightness of cosmos. Their delicateness is enhanced by the manner in which they sit atop their long stems. They blow easily in the wind, yet remain upright. Their colors are numerous, as these were, yet I chose to tone this photograph. I wanted the delicacy and beauty of the cosmos to be the central idea of the image, not their color.
Sunflowers at sunset
Our past week’s weather has been warm with winds out of the northwest. That’s usually not something to note, except that there are wildfires in Canada and in the Pacific Northwest. The smoke from these fires has been passing through our atmosphere in Minnesota, creating hazy days and amazing sunrises and sunsets. Last night we had a quick rain shower that moved through the area in the evening. Before sunset, the rain passed and I grabbed the opportunity to see what the sunset might be like. These sunflowers were backlit by the orange sky and glowing sun; they all seemed to symbolize the warmth and golden colors that we associate with the summer months.
Brightness and colors of summer
Summer is about sunshine, warmth, and color. We’re surrounded by blue skies, green grass, and the flowers that bloom profusely, sharing their colors. Our gardens are in full bloom now; the coneflowers, roses, lilies, clematis, and coleus. The coneflowers have always been one of my favorites. They start out a pale yellow, with their petals reaching upward to the sun. As they mature, the petals become a deep pink and then turn downward. It’s almost as if they were two completely different flowers. Their beauty and brightness always speaks to me of summer.
A tale of two ball parks
We celebrated summer this week with baseball – three nights of it, to be exact. The Twin Cities was host to the US tradition of the MLB All Star Game and Home Run Derby. Target Field sits in downtown Minneapolis, with the skyline looming beyond the outfield. The stands were filled with Minnesotans and baseball fans from across the country, totaling over 41,000 people. The setting was festive, the fans were all in great spirits, the players were enjoying the traditions, and the baseball was memorable. The following night we took in a Minnesota tradition – a town ball game in Miesville. Jack Ruhr stadium sits off a county road with the beauty of a mid-western sunset over the cornfields as its backdrop. The Miesville Mudhens played well, but were not a match for the Austin Greyhounds on this night. The crowd of about 100 locals enjoyed both the evening and the baseball. Two contrasts – each with their own sense of grandeur and traditions.
